Mustard BBQ Sauce
Ingredients
1 cup (240 mL) prepared yellow mustard
1/2 cup (120 mL) sugar
1/4 cup (60 mL) light brown sugar
3/4 cup (180 mL) cider vinegar
1/4 cup (60 mL) water
2 tablespoons (30 mL) chili powder (mild)
1 teaspoon (5 mL) black pepper
1 teaspoon (5 mL) white pepper
1/2 teaspoon (2.5 mL) cayenne (optional)
1 teaspoon (5 mL) soy sauce
2 tablespoons (30 mL) butter
1 tablespoon (15 mL) liquid smoke (hickory flavoring)
Instructions
In a medium saucepan, combine the yellow mustard, sugar, light brown sugar, cider vinegar, and water over medium heat.
Stir the mixture until the sugars dissolve completely.
Add the chili powder, black pepper, white pepper, and cayenne (if using) to the saucepan and mix well.
Stir in the soy sauce and continue to heat the mixture until it starts to simmer.
Reduce the heat to low, and add the butter and liquid smoke. Stir until the butter is melted and the sauce is well combined.
Let the sauce simmer for about 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it thickens slightly.
Remove the saucepan from heat and let the BBQ sauce cool before using or storing.
Store any leftover sauce in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to two weeks
